One friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.” They kept on walking until they found an oasis. Thirsty, they stopped for water. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire, fell in and started drowning. His friend saved him. That evening he wrote on a stone: “Today my best friend saved my life.” The friend who slapped and saved his best friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone, why?” He replied: “When someone hurts us we should write it in the sand where the winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where it will be long remembered.” Learn to write your hurts in sand and carve your benefits in stone. Someone observed that it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire lifetime to forget them. That fall there was a camp meeting near Jacksonville Alabama and a young Indian who had read that New Testament diligently recognized the circuit preacher and requested to be baptized in the river. The preacher insisted that he could do it without going to the river and he proceeded to take a glass of water and poured it on the young man’s head. The young man looked at the preacher and asked if that was baptism and the preacher responded affirmatively. Cheryl and I will be with our girls and their men at the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Festival in OK for a few days late this week...I will come back Sat evening to finish packing for camp. This has become an important tradition for our family and so fun to be together. There will be a back to school Lock-In in Salina on Aug 13 but we will need a parent or two to make that trip happen. Garden City will be hosting a Back to School event on Aug 28 and we will go to that for a long day….more details later.
