Page 0: Page 1: WAIPUNA FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS MARCH / UNE 2010 MAY / J APRIL 2010 IN THIS ISSUE • • Promotion / Relegation Representative Players 10th Grade Tournament Men’s Team Waipuna Park Fields Laws of the Game WBOPFA Holiday Programme For Sale / Wanted to Buy Lost Property BOP Kiwis PROMOTION / RELEGATION As in past years the WBOPJMC (Western Bay of Plenty Junior Management Committee) the controlling body for our competition will assess all teams during the break and either promote or relegate teams depending on how they have fared to date. This may mean a split within the current Division into two halves - a top half and a bottom half, based on points earned. The respective halves will be teamed up with the top and bottom half of another equal Division. Conversely it may mean the top few teams from one Division go up into the bottom of the next Division and similarly the bottom few from the one above will move down to take their place. In an effort to involve everybody, the WBOPJMC have this year asked for input from within the clubs and coaches have been given a choice. Your coaches have already met and their recommendations have been forwarded for consideration. Whatever the outcome, if last year is anything to go by it worked very well and the games were a lot more even and a win was well earned within the reorganised grades. REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS This year Waipuna Football Club nominated 27 players to be considered for Representative Teams in the BOP. Of those 27 players we had 9 boys and 2 girls accepted. A few of our nominated players were unable to make trials for a number of reasons so it was more than likely, a few more may have represented the club in their respective grades. We feel those that made it through are worth a mention. • • • • • • • • Welcome to the fourth (May/June) newsletter for 2010 which marks the halfway point of the season. We have an unusually long break this year with no games scheduled for 4 weeks. This includes one week where the Saturday (26th) was put aside to cater for any cancelled games across the whole competition. The cancelled games that happened as a result of the Waipuna Park being closed on the 15th due to bad weather and the state of the grounds have all been replayed over the last 2 weeks. Thank you to the coaches that were affected and to the parents and players who braved yet another week-end of shocking weather to play the games. It was well worth the effort as most games resulted in a win for the Waipuna teams which means points on the table which would have otherwise not been earned. A number of coaches throughout the grades are continuing with training sessions and have organised, are organising friendly games to keep the interest of players piqued. We’re sure you’ll do us proud. 10th GRADE TOURNAMENT Our Annual 10th Grade Tournament is fast approaching and due to be held on the 25th July 2010. It is open to all players registered to play 10th Grade and below, across all divisions. All the sponsors from last year have agreed to help us out again this year and include BNZ as our major sponsor as well as Wright Sports, the Aussie Butcher and McDonalds. Without the help of these wonderful organisations we would struggle to be able to offer the prizes that we do and we are grateful of their continued support. The tournament is structured to be able to host 16 teams, 2 from each participating club. Each team is guaranteed at least 3 games, two in the pool play and another in either the quarter-finals for 3rd & 4th placing or the quarter-finals for 1st and 2nd placing. Those going on to semi-finals and finals will of course enjoy more game time. 2 Depending on entrants we will try to ensure even games between the 3 Divisions that might be represented on the day. Please come along and support the players and join in the atmosphere of a good day of competitive football. The day is scheduled to start at 9.00am and will finish around 3.00pm. A BBQ will be running on the day. MENS TEAM To all those fit middle aged men out there, parents and coaches alike – anybody really, your club needs you. If interested in forming a men’s team to play in the social competition next year please put your hand up. A conversation started on a driveway somewhere in suburbia ended up by one of the parties saying “let’s do it”. The Waipuna Football Club Committee have rubber stamped the project and are happy to put their name to it so come’on have a go. Please forward your name address and contact number to crawford@simpson.net.nz and we’ll see what numbers we get, of interested participants. You’re never too old or young to loose a few pounds and get fit in the bargain, or to indeed maintain your peak physical condition. The social league plays every second Sunday afternoon. We’d love to hear from you – and no you can’t all be the goalie. WAIPUNA PARK FIELDS Great to see the new field finally sporting a set of goalposts. This will give the other main pitch some well earned rest with only half the games being played on it. As you are all no doubt aware we had a very hot dry summer and the park has suffered with little or no new grass gowth prior to the start of the season. The Tauranga City Council, charged with the upkeep of the Park, were not able to do a large proportion of normal scheduled works to the fields due to the lack of rain during the autumn months so the park has suffered as a consequence of that. We did close the park to all games on the 15th May as there was a Page 3: May / J une 2010 Newsletter lot of surface water present that morning and a good number of firm patches alongside large areas that had been sodden and softened by the rain. This was seen as a recipe for twisted ankles and other leg injuries had it been played on. Alongside those player safety concerns, we also had to consider the preservation of the playing surface so early on in the season. The good news is that the Park has been rolled at our request and is due to be rolled again shortly. We have also had notification from the Council that the Park is earmarked for a Spring renovation and they will be advised by an expert from the NZ Sports Turf Institute. Hopefully this will have a positive impact on the playing surface for next season. Lets hope we have the autumn rain needed at the beginning of the season next year. LAWS OF THE GAME In each newsletter we will try to cover some of the more important “Laws of the Game” so you as a parent can better understand some of the decisions that the referees make. Here are two more which are at times controversial. Law 10 “The Method of Scoring” and Law 11 “Offside” Law 10 - Goal Scored A goal is scored when the whole of the ball passes over the goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, provided that no infringements of the Laws of the Game have been committed previously by the team scoring the goal. GOAL NO GOAL NO GOAL NO GOAL Law 11 – Offside Offside position It is not in itself an offence to be in an offside position. A player is in an offside position if: • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the secondlast opponent. A player is not in an offside position if: - he is in his own half of the field of play - he is level with the second-last opponent - or he is level with the last two opponents Offence A player in an offside position is only penalised, if at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee involved in active play by: • Firstly though, the above picture shows that• an important change to the Goal-Line has • been introduced by FIFA as a result of one of the games in the World cup. Hopefully this will prove once and for all, that there is no need for the fourth official. - interfering with play or - interfering with an opponent or - gaining an advantage by being in that position 3 Page 4: May / J une 2010 Newsletter No Offence There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from: - a goal kick - a throw in - a corner kick Infringements and Sanctions In the event of an offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from where the infringement occurred.
