SANTA CRUZ
YOUTH GROUP
NEWSLETTER
Welcome! What’s new?
Welcome to the inaugural edition of “Elijah’s Knights”, the newsletter of th e Santa Cruz Youth Group. In an effort to communicate to the parents and guardians of our youth as well as the community of our parish, we will put out a quarterly communication about what the youth group of your parish is doing. We have been very busy sin ce we took o ver as directors of your youth group this past December. In January, we p articipated in the March fo r Life. Over Rodeo weekend, we held a retreat for our teens. In May, we facilitated a day-long retreat for the 8th grade students of San Xavier, St. John the Evangelist and Santa Cruz s chools while at the same tim e providing a weekly get together for our youth. Our next goal is to take a group of our teens to a charismatic weekend retreat over Labor Day weekend (September 3 -5th , 2010) along with our sister parish of St. Margaret Mary’s Youth Group, to Anaheim, California. On the back of this newsletter you will
find a list of fundraising events we are hosting this month. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Why Elijah’s Knights?
The name of our newsletter is based on the origins on Mount Carmel in Palestine where w e read in the II Book of Kings about the great p rophet Elijah. Elijah defended the true faith in th e God of Israel, and he, also saw the small cloud that brought life-giving rain after a long drought. Carmel is deeply asso ciated with Elijah and our Mother Mary. From Elijah, the Carmelites inh erited a burning passion for the living and true God and the desire to make His Word intimately their own in order to witness to Its presen ce in the world: with Mary, the most Pure Mother of God, they are committed to live “in allegian ce to Jesus Christ” with the same intimate and deep feelings which w ere Mary’s. We pray that as Elijah’s Kn ights, we can be active defenders of the Catholic faith as we walk in Christ with our Blessed Mother.
During a game night, Oscar tried to stack 36 cups on top of each other in a pyramid and then stack them in a single stack again in one minute. He fell short.
Youth Group going to SCRC!
Growing up today as a teen can be very diffi cult. In order to give teens the tools needed for their spiritual growth, we will participate in the annual teen retreat put on by the Southern Califo rnia Ren ewal Community (SCRC) Labor Day weekend, September 3rd through the 5th in Anaheim, California. We will be traveling by bus with our sister parish, St. Margaret’s Mary’s Youth group. This retreat is an opportunity for our youth to be transformed by discovering a n ew openness to the reality of the Holy Spirit along with thousands of other Catholic teens from across the southwestern United
