Bjorn the duck was rescued by WRAS volunteer Dick Harris at Bexhill back in July. Although there were no open wounds Bjorn was unable to hold his head up, he couldn’t eat nor stand on his own. He was so distressed that we thought the vet may say put him to sleep, but luckily the damage was just muscular. He was placed on a course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections and within 10 days he was up and about and had full use of his head and neck again. Dick was able to take him back to Edgerton Park in Bexhill and release him back on the pond. “Refresher” the fox cub is all at Sea, at Sovereign Harbour This fox was rescued just after midnight early on Sunday 11th July. WRAS rescuer Tony Neads rushed to the harbour where a boat had spotted the fox and hauled it on board in a collapsed state. Very cold and hypothermic the fox was rushed up to WRAS’s Casualty Care Centre and warmed up slowly. The fox has made a remarkable r ec ov e ry and was monitored for several days before being rel eased back at the harbour. High death rate in Emaciated Hogs. WRAS has been horrified this summer by the number of hedgehogs being found dehydrated and emaciated. Some are even coming in via vets practices and dying within the first 12 hours. “I have never seen so many severely emaciated and dehydrated hedgehogs in all my time of helping wildlife” said Trevor. WRAS has urged people to put out fresh water to help wildlife during the summer months to help wildlife out. AD1 Ad2 01323 479446 24 hr Emergency Service - Free Estimates. On Tuesday 6th July a shed fire led to the neighbouring house catching fire with extensive damage. The following morning the owner of the shed found a hedgehog trapped inside his home. Although there was no visible fire damage to the hedgehog the poor little creature did smell of smoke, was dehydrated and a little underweight. Summer Events Fun! This summer saw WRAS take part in a number of events. The first was a collection at Newhaven’s Sainsburys Store. Loads of WRAS volunteers helped out and a grant total of £702.69 was raised thanks to the store visitors who are always very generous towards WRAS! WRAS attended the 999 Emergency Services Show on the Western Lawns at Eastbourne over the 10th & 11th July. It was a great event and many people came along to see us and see how Trevor had recovered from his snake bite! We took £179.43 in donations and £252.50 in sales goods, the The hedgehog named Sherbet, was taken home by Kathy and given treatment. She was also discovered to have worms so was kept in for a few weeks for worming too. About 4 weeks later we were able to return Sherbet back to her garden. Which certainly looked a little different to when we rescue her. She soon made himself at home and settled in. 999 Show at Eastbourne total profit sum raised for WRAS was £336.93. A great crowd at the VW Bus Stop Event at Crowborough helped raise an amazing £1000! We had a display at the Lammas Festival which was well attended and raised £225 in donations and about £75 in profit from fundraising goods. We had a very generous lady donate £100 at the Eastbourne Dog Show too. Help Wildlife by buying an advert! Sarah Jane Honeywell came down to Sussex to WRAS at the beginning of August, in advance of opening our Casualty Centre at Whitesmith, so she could meet us and see for herself the work we do. Continued from Front Page… She met us up on Ashdown Forest initially to met Caramel the baby deer rescued in Crowborough back in July, but also Button and Billie two of last years baby deer paid us a visit, which was a great surprise. After having lunch there we visited Kathy’s garden to see some of the young hedgehogs where Sarah Jane was able to hold “Tic Tac” the hedgehog - the first hedgehog Sarah Jane has ever held. (See the front page picture.) Button, and Billie meet SJ. We then visited Whitesmith to see the how the work was progressing at the new centre and meet some of the WRAS volunteers. Finally Sarah Jane followed us up to East Grinstead’s Moat Pond where she helped Trevor release a young duck which he had rescued the previous day entangled in fishing line and a hook. SJ helps Trevor release a duck at Moat Pond. Sarah Jane thanked WRAS for a great visit saying "It was a magical visit! I would be honoured to become your patron, wow that would be awesome." The Cbeebies star Sarah Jane will be officially opening Phase One of WRAS's new Casualty Care Centre at Whitesmith in the beginning of September. Trevor Weeks said "Sarah-Jane is a fantastic actor and has such a bubbly personality. She was delighted to meet some of WRAS's casualties last week especially Caramel the baby deer as well as Button and Billie last years baby deer, plus some of the many hedgehogs we have in care." "We are privileged to have her come on board as a patron and her support means a lot to us and the casualties" said Trevor. Kathy and Trevor were called out in July to rescue these four little baby hedgehogs. We believe mum was killed on the Brighton Road close to Lewes Prison. Local residents noticed the little hogs wandering around calling for mum at the bottom of a slope close to where their nest was. The garden was checked over and no other youngsters could be found and the nest was monitored to ensure mum had disappeared. The babies were taken to WRAS carer Monica Russell in Eastbourne for hand rearing. They all did well and by the end of August they were young adults and over 500 grams each and out in a run in Kathy’s garden. We have had a spate of hedgehogs with damaged rear legs over the past few months. One hedgehog was found caught in netting and had fractured it’s rear leg. As sharp bone was sticking through the skin, it needed urgent treatment. The poor creature was taken to an out of hours vet centre who wanted £400 for an operation! So after consultation with veterinary staff at St Tiggywinkles the hedgehog was rushed to them to operate on. WRAS would like to express its thanks to Meridian Vets at Peacehaven for helping out with operations on hedgehogs during normal surgery hours as well as Henley House Vets for x-rays, treatment and assessments. WRAS had an unusual visitor to its Casualty Centre this summer. This poor little skylark had a very close shave after landing in the middle of the A27 near Berwick, flying up and hitting the window of one of our volunteers cars, and landing back in the road. The poor little creature was luckily just concussed and after 4 days of care and rest, the little chap was nice and lively and flying about and well ready for release. WRAS volunteer Ian who hit the bird took him back to Berwick and released him in a field off from the road where he took off well. Ian told WRAS “it was great to see him go, an absolute joy to see after his lucky escape on the A27.” Trevor’s Award nominations. WRAS founder Trevor Weeks has been nominated for two awards. He has been shortlisted for the Sussex Eco Awards and also for an IFAW Animal Action Award. We wait to see if he has won either! More in our next newsletter. “Plop” the Tawny Owl. “Plop” the tawny owl which has been hand reared by WRAS carer Hannah Corke has been successfully released back into the wild. He was rescued back in May after being found well away from any trees. Once he was able to feed for himself he was given the use of one of WRAS’s aviaries where he spent a couple of months developing his adult feathers. Luckily we have Tawny Owls around the area where Plop has being kept. Plop was given a soft release in August from his aviary where we continue to put food down for him to help him find his way. After the recent so-called “attacks” on children by foxes, WRAS has been advising people who are concerned about foxes visiting their gardens to seek advice and help from The Fox Project’s website www.foxproject.org.uk and should you need help with Fox repellents, deterrents, Fox proofing or control you can always call on the services on Foxolutions who are a humane pest control company who specialise is foxes. www.foxolutions.co.uk or call them on 0844 804 0630. Having Problems with Foxes? Page 7: Caramel from Crowborough. WRAS rescuers were dispatched to help a baby fallow deer found wandering around the A26 at Five Ash Down near Uckfield. Motorists stopped and the deer was picked up and taken to Crowborough where we were then called, as they were unable to get hold of any other rescue organisations that late at night. On site the young deer was very dazed and concussed with obvious discomfort to her stomach. She was taken to WRAS deer experts Chris and Sylvia who looked after Baby Button last year. It was not long before Chris had formed a tight bond with the little deer which was named “Caramel”. 3 weeks later and she was up and about and running around the garden enjoying life to the max! WRAS’s Centre set to open. WRAS’s Casualty Care Centre is set to be officially opened by WRAS’s new Patron Sarah Jane Honeywell on Saturday 4th September. The work has gone really well and not cost as much as expected thanks to WRAS’s volunteers putting a lot of hard work to help out. We will be posting round a special newsletter about the opening soon with pictures of the opening and the completed Phase one of our the new Centre. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved and helped get this centre off the ground. We could not have done it without you all. We will be launching an appeal for Phase Two of the centre in our next newsletter so we can get additional cages and pens erected as well as improve our ability to deal with educational work. WRAS would like to thank Pro-Tech Security Systems, Eastbourne, for providing a discounted computerised entry system. As well as Burtons Veterinary for discounted veterinary cages and scales.
