I had a speech at OpenSolaris launch event in Tokyo. Now you know OpenSolaris is in progress for new version -2008.11 So I tried to install new version preview on my Eee 701. It works well on my Eee 701, but still has a bit problem about the installation. Let me show about the lately OpenSolaris Installation on my Eee 701.
Eee 900 works well (ASUS is going to launch on 20th of Oct. in Japan) Eee 901 doesn't work yet...many many problem using OpenSolaris:-((

Prepare those items for the installation.
External USB CD-ROM It's easy to choose, because almost CD-ROM unit work well on Eee PC. SDHC Card You can use SSD,If you don't use XP or Linux which originally use it.
Choose high-quality and high-speeded SDHC like TOSHIBA and Panasonic for good to install OpenSolaris. Format SDHC as FAT32 using format tool on the Windows OS before the installation

Update the latest BIOS.
The latest BIOS rev. is 910 Check the installation mode as 'Finished' in BIOS menu.

In the grub menu, you have to add "-v" option following "kernel" line to use internal keyboard.
After the installation, you should edit the file “/rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst” to add "-v" option to grub menu so that keyboard would work.
You know OpenSolaris Installation is look like "Ubuntu" so You can install from Live CD and click the “Install OpenSolaris” for the installation. Because of SDHC problem, the installation is sometimes failed on the way of the process.
In this case, you should format again using Windows :-) Some SDHC cant install OpenSolaris, you might better install to SSD

Network and audio don't work basic installation, so you have to add and edit the driver so that it works well.

It took about 1 hours to install OpenSolaris 2008.11 using SDHC
A bit a longer time to install.....than ubuntu.....

WiFi works well, but Wired doesn't work well. It is in progress. You can download atheros wifi network driver for Eee 701 from OpenSolaris.org website.
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/laptop/ downloads/ath-0.7.3-pkg.tar.gz
Before the installation, you must remove the former atheros driver package named “SUNWatheros” by pkg uninstall and then reboot the system. After reboot, you can install new “SUNWatheros” by pkgadd. If the driver doesn't work after the installation, you should reboot the system so that the driver would work well.

You can download latest audio HD driver for Eee from OpenSolaris.org website.
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/servlet/JiveServle t/download/79-73812-284808-8059/audiohdpostb99.tar.gz
You should replace former audiohd driver.
obj32/audiohd→/kernel/drv/audiohd obj64/audiohd→/kernel/drv/amd64/audiohd

Use update_drv for the modem installation
update_drv -a -i usb12d1,1003 usbsacm
umplumb wifi-driver so that modem would work. Taki-san*1 wrote about emobile setting on his blog
You can check out the file;/etc/ppp/peers/emobile,/etc/ppp/emobilechat,/etc/ppp/pap-secrets on his website;http://kohju.justplayer.com/Tips_Solaris_ emobile.html

(*modem (*caution))
usbsacm has some problem using D02HW on OpenSolaris – it is not only modem but also USB memory, so OpenSolaris sometimes doesn't recognize as "modem".
Taki-san says you should connect the modem before your Eee is on so that the modem would work well (or It doesn't work). Check “/dev/cua/” if the modem wouldn't work.
pg 15
Page 16: Installing additional driver
(*modem (*edit /etc/ppp/peers/emobile))
/dev/cua/? ‘?’ is a first number of the result of ‘ls /dev/cua/’ you should use. You don't need to edit the other lines
root# ls /dev/cua 012 root# root#cat /etc/ppp/peers/emobile ..... updetach /dev/cua/0 230400

Wired doesn't work yet.
See the bugs report; RFE for NIC support (6677682)
Webcam doesn't work yet
It works well on Eee 900 :-(
Internal keyboard doesn't work yet without adding "v" option to grub menu.
See the bug report;kb8042 driver does not support built in keyboard for Asus EEE PC(CR 6695011)

Page 20: Conclusion
You have to prepare many things to do before installation on your Eee. After removing the former driver, you must 'reboot' your system to complete removing the driver,or I can't install 'new' network and audiohd drivers. It is not stable to use D02HW on OpenSolaris, so you should check under '/dev/cua' directory if the modem doesn't work. Enjoy!
