Page 4: Diagnosed at age 18, in May 2003
Two weeks before my high school graduation I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare childhood bone cancer.
Page 5: 9 months of inpatient chemo…
9 mths of inpatient high dose chemo (Adriamycin, Cisplatin, Methotrexate) more than 200 miles from home.
Page 6: Then I had limb salvage surgery…
Replaced 6” of my femur and my knee with custom titanium. After months of rehab, I learned to walk again…some never do.
Page 7: 9 more months of chemo, along with many hospitalizations…
Page 8: 6 major lung surgeries…
With tumors still in my lungs, I am now in-operable – I have only 2/3 of my left lung and 1/3 of my right lung remaining.
Page 9: 2 more chemo regimines
8 months of inpatient chemo in Billings followed by a year of oral chemo
Page 10: High dose radiation in Houston
After finding the chemo wasn’t working and surgery not an option I started a month of radiation in Houston October 23, 2009
Page 11: I hope you never have to hear the words, "Your child has cancer."
I hope you never have to hear, "The prognosis is not good.“
hope you never have to see a mother, alone, huddled, in a dark hospital corridor...crying quietly, after just being told, "There is nothing more we can do.“
I
I hope you never have to experience any of these things...Because...only then...
Will you understand...

Finding a cure by:
Raising private funds to support research for new
treatment options Advocating, on behalf of the Montana’s childhood cancer community, in DC for urgently needed federal funding Our long term goal is to have a derby in every
state, collaboratively raising over $500,000 a year
Page 13: Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children
ages 1-19. 1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20. 12,600 children are diagnosed each year.
About 400-1000 of those cases are
osteosarcoma (Matt’s cancer) or 1/300,000 people
3,000 children will die of cancer each year. There are currently 30,000-40,000
children fighting cancer in the U.S.
Page 14: The cause of most childhood cancers is still unknown. Only 3% of cancer research money goes toward childhood cancers. The number of children diagnosed with cancer has increased every year for
the past 25 years. Teenagers and young adults (ages 15-22) are the only age group that have flat or declining survival rates from cancer. In the past 35 years ONLY ONE new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use. Most treatments are little more than mega doses of adult cancer chemotherapy treatments. The result of these high doses of chemo on children is the highest rate of secondary cancers.
Teenagers have the highest cancer fatality rate of any age group under 80.
Their cancers tend to be much more rare, therefore lacking established treatments. Their cancers also tend to be far more advanced when diagnosed.
Page 15: BEFORE THIS DAY IS OVER AND YOU LAY YOUR HEAD ON YOUR PILLOW AND CLOSE YOUR EYES.....THERE WILL BE SEVEN (7) CHILDREN THAT WILL NOT MAKE IT THROUGH THE DAY! SEVEN children that will lose their battle with cancer.

Matt and Nick were osteo buddies who met in Houston in October

research study, "Molecular Basis of Genomic Instability in Osteosarcoma," that is being undertaken by the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department at the Baylor College of Medicine. The grant was funded by the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. Sent an advocate to Washington DC on behalf of the all those in the Montana childhood cancer community.
